This past Saturday, I spent 3 hours photographing a beautiful outdoor wedding for the newly wed, Atiya and Mohammed. Atiya and Mohammed are African American Muslims, a sweet and kind couple. Their wedding was unique and a cultural experience for me as I have never had the privileged of photographing a Ghanaian-Muslim wedding. I was honored to have been invited to and hired to photograph this wedding.
The wedding colors were white, gold, and Kente. The bride wore a stunning white dress from David’s Bridal, with an added headdress for the ceremony. Kente is a type of silk and cotton fabric made of interwoven cloth strips and is native to an ethnic group of South Ghana. During the ceremony there were commitments spoken by the bride and groom, and a recital from the Koran from a family member.
This wedding was a delight to shoot. Here’s a summary of their wedding through my lens.
This was awesome. Atiya had family that were’nt able to attend, so they were skyped in from Atlanta to watch the wedding.

Upon arriving at the ceremony I had the honor of talking with Atiya’s sister, who gave me a quick cultural lesson on what would transpire at the wedding. Her sister informed me of some cultural traditions. For example, at the end of the ceremony, a benediction is given followed by the announcement of the new couple. In their culture, the bride and groom do not kiss publicly on the lips. There would also be no bouquet, and no pictures of the bride could be posted of the bride prior to everyone seeing here walk down the aisle. You will see that we have not posted any of Atiya’s getting ready pictures. I learned so much, it was amazing.
